St Kilda … Avenue?

Melbourne Council wants to cut a lane of traffic each way on St Kilda Rd to make room for bikes. Will it make the city a safer place for cyclists or just create bottlenecks for motorists?

it appears that the idea has already been hit on the head. I think it was the head of vicroads or the minister (I can’t remember which) spoke on the ABC this morning and said he will not allow any road he is responsible for to be cut to vehicular traffic. he said he doesn’t want vehicles travelling into the city to be obstructed in any way. so if he doesn’t approve it melb city council can’t do anything.

Bikes may have there advantages but not at the majority expense. Keilor Road Niddrie is one area where the road has been narrowed to provide a bike lane and in afternoon peak it takes up to 20 minutes for a tram to travel 2 kilometres along Keilor road because of the bank up caused. In regards to St Kilda Road I reckon Swanston Street should be
re-opened to traffic all day. The number of cars that already go through the Red lights at the Latrobe St. end
and go straight down to St Kilda road make it laughable.
And did you know a bike lane does not need a solid white line all the way, just a few bike symbols every couple of hundred metres is enough to make you break the law by travelling in them!

I know if there is an accident involving your car wheels being over that solid white line indicating a bike track, even without a bike being involved, the car driver is in real strife. Personal experience.

In support of bike riders along St Kilda Road though I must admit the marked track get utilised by hundreds of bikers each way traffic, in and out of the city. Always dicey getting out of a car there at dusk……for the biker and the driver. They’re so skinny from all the exercise there not much to look out in the gloom…..
