Are we sacrificing our parks for a dollar?
Published 1 year, 5 months ago in Making News.
Our inner city parks are being loved to death by major events and greenies say councils are sacrificing them for a quick buck. Melbourne Council recently audited its parks and found public events did damage to the World Heritage Listed Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens and others.
But still, it allows Yarra Park to be used for MCG car parking and the most sensitive part of Carlton Gardens to have heavy landscape exhibits on it for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
As the drought goes on, it becomes harder for our parks to survive. Are they more important than trade shows and footy car parking?

Yep, stuff the trade shows & force all footy spectators to cach PT.
Seems like dollars are more important to our pollies than most things.
Definitely.
What is with the obsession to be the events capital of the world? While good for the economy, there is no doubt our city’s resources are suffering.

I agree entirely. It’s worse out on the fringes. There was such a thing as “green wedge” that was supposed to prevent developers continually carving up the edges of the city into a never ending nightmare of suburban sprawl, but our local Melton Shire Council are doing everything they can to get around it.
Does everything have to be accessible by car?
