City councils want mobile billboards banned from parking more than 15 minutes on our congested roads. Port Phillip has already done it and Yarra Council is considering a ban.

Yarra Councillor Kay Meadows says they are unregulated, they hog parks and clog the already congested city streets.

Do you think they have any place on our roads?

No get rid of them. Apart from being ugly, when you’re driving a car you should be concentrating on the road not reading billboards.

They should be banned, not because they are an eyesore. They are often parked in areas or driven through areas where they cause obstruction. They are dangerous and often travel so slow they are a cause of bottlenecks in shopping centres.

I love advertising and support its use almost everywhere - there are so many empty spaces that could be adorned with attractive ads for great products, with the benefits being passed on to the consumers and employees… BUT actually creating a space with no other use besides advertising is so wasteful. And not only that, but the fact that the ad takes up the road, is terrible for the environment and a distraction to drivers is not cool. (Although I have read that “distractions” can be helpful sometimes… it helps keep drivers awake, hence sculptures on freeways, etc… anyway, who knows…)

Companies should think carefully before using mobile billboards… I’m sure it would put many people off their products.

Why not just paint cars with ads and sell them cheaply? = Same amount of advertising for the company and cheap cars for people who wouldn’t be able to afford one otherwise. Everybody wins.

to be honest, i cant even recall the last time i saw a mobile billboard on the road, and they have always been on the grass next to the road, not an obstruction. the TAC have approved them ,as they use them all the time, so i dont understand how they can be dangerous. should TAC be banned from using them as well?

should these mobile billboard companys just pack up and leave, even though even though they generate employment for hundreds of people? is that fair? if so, take down ALL billboards, and ALL signage on cars, trucks and buildings.

All power to Kay Meadows. Such a move is long overdue. The worst mobile billboards are those which travel in convoys. I have never understood why they were not banned years ago. There is no logic in permitting this added congestion to already congested roads. As for the comment by Rose, there is a vast difference between mobile billboards and other forms of advertising such as static billboards and street signage. The latter do not add to road congestion - and that is what Councillor Meadows is fighting against. BAN THEM NOW!

Hey, You can’t get rid of mobile billboards! It’s just totally impractical. All delivery trucks for our supermarkets and shops have now become mobile billboards. And if you are in business, even micro-business with a little car you are entitled to paint your car with any message you like (as long as it is not offensive and passes the Advertising Code!).

For example Golden1 being in showbiz and moving around with her shows, could advertise her travelling troupe shows in her car/truck/ute/sedan/peoplesmover/wagon or whatever (what is it Goldie?).

… and just imagine Lady Chaos advertising her black tallness on her mini car? Wonderful stuff.

And YES, ‘meinrosebud’ having a red Hammer and Sickle logo on your Evil Overlord huge mobile billboard overpowering everybody with your everpresent scare.

Isn’t that what Village of Nook is all about? Oh what a colourful ecstasy?

Yes , of course they should, its a complete waste of resources.

I disagree with gerp, delivery trucks have a useful purpose, motorised billboards do not. And of course, a micro-business with a little car and a little advertising can claim the car is a company vehicle and get tax relief.

Why dont the advertisers pay private motorists to carry adverts in the same way that taxis do? No much take up in Toorak but I’m sure there are others who would welcome a little extra cash.

Funny this subject should come up….There has been a billboard about Mobile Phones, parked in Chesterville Road for some years now…I suppose it does move but it is mostly there every day. And in Grange Road, there has been one of those tiny cars sponsored with ads parked every day for three weeks, but in the past days or so, is now around the corner…..gerp you are on something liquid or solid? why promote this annoying and ugly innovation known as advertising….look where it got “Kittens”…they’ve been euthanased beyond recovery I fear….It doesn’t pay to call too much attention to your wares….in fact, if can bring dire consequences…..
