We’ve got records covered

Melbourne’s nightclubs have to wear a 1400 per cent hike in copyright fees, which they say they’ll have to pass on to clubbers.

Given that Melbourne clubs are already pretty expensive, will this stop you from going out?

An immobile hatred

A Sydney bloke has been charged with destroying six mobile phone towers overnight … with a restored army tank.

The Melburnian wonders: where does one get an army tank at 3 o’clock in the morning, and what would you do with it?

ABC online has the story here. The video in particular is priceless:

Make a note: check your iPod

Thieves are attacking students in inner city parks to get their iPods and laptops. Melbourne’s armed robbery squad told the Melbourne Leader that students were victims of half the robberies reported in June. In one case, a student had a gun pressed to his head at Alexandra Gardens. Do you feel safe walking to uni? Is there any other option but to carry your laptop around?

To be a Good Samaritan?

A man was shot dead on Monday morning in Melbourne trying to help a woman he thought was in trouble. Leaving out what you think of the shooting, will this stop you from helping strangers?

Our inner city parks are being loved to death by major events and greenies say councils are sacrificing them for a quick buck. Melbourne Council recently audited its parks and found public events did damage to the World Heritage Listed Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens and others.

But still, it allows Yarra Park to be used for MCG car parking and the most sensitive part of Carlton Gardens to have heavy landscape exhibits on it for the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

As the drought goes on, it becomes harder for our parks to survive. Are they more important than trade shows and footy car parking?

Should Connex be sacked?

Frustrated commuters are meeting on Thursday night to call for the sacking of Connex. Green groups and the Public Transport Users’ Association say the train operator’s performance this year shows that privatisation doesn’t work, and are calling for the State Government to run the system again.

Do you reckon Connex should be sacked? Could the Government do any better?

Will you pay your parking fines now?

An electronic parking detector has turned out to be faulty an up to 1500 people may have been fined incorrectly. A former grey ghost told the Melbourne Leader that Yarra Council’s electronic system was faulty. The full story is here: www.melbourneleader.com.au

Will you be paying your fines now?

This week, Melbourne Leader caught up with Peter Ferne, who is refusing to turn off his spruiking tape even though the council fines him $1000 every time they catch him - and his shop is opposite City Hall!

Mr Ferne runs Arthur Daley’s Clearance House and loops a tape of him spruiking his wares that draws people from Swanston St down into the basement shop. He reckons Melbourne Council’s new spruiking policy discriminates because it allows bands to play amplified music but he can’t use spruiking to make a living.

What do you think about amplified spruiking? Is it annoying, or just part of the Swanston St soundscape?

How did you go at Uni?

Like most students, The Melburnian’s university years were mis-spent, but we wonder whether students can afford to piss-fart around these days doing non-curriculum things like getting involved in politics, thinking about Big Ideas or - heaven forbid - self-discovery!

How was uni life for you? Did you invest precious time pondering the secrets of the universe, or fall asleep at your study desk?

Where does the money go?

Taxpayers spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on support services for public housing tenants that the tenants say are not being provided. Melbourne Leader this week revealed that the Atherton Gardens Chinese Association missed out on grants funding because its application was never lodged by a welfare officer.

Advocates want a manager on every estate to distribute and audit the use of council and State Government grants.

Is our money being well spent?
